Stop The Stink! Getting Rid Of Unpleasant Smells In The Home

Victoria had been complaining about a wee smell in the house for a few days and it wasn’t until today I smelt it too!  Where on earth was it coming from and how did it get there?  Moments like these are rare but must be quite amusing for a fly on the wall to witness two people drifting around a room with their heads lifted high sniffing in all directions and every item to try and find the source.  After some time we gave up.  It wasn’t until later in the day when we were both sat on the sofa did that horrid whiff return and we realised we were sat in a pool of dried out wee from what must have been our 3 year old son Reuben, who still on occasions doesn’t quite make it to the toilet.  YUCK.  And sofa cushions aren’t the easiest to clean!

There is nothing worse than an unpleasant smell in the home. A distinct and musty odor gives your home a particularly unpleasant atmosphere, not to mention frustration if you’ve spent a long time trying to isolate the source. If you are struggling to isolate the reason why your home smells so disgusting, try a few of these…

Identifying The Source

One of the most effective ways to get rid of stuffy and stinky odors is to find the source. It can be tricky, but it’s worth knowing exactly what can cause such a foul odor in the home. Mold, mildew, or bad plumbing are very common occurrences. And if this is a very likely option, especially if you haven’t done a deep clean in such a long time, or your home is prone to mold or mildew, it’s worth getting down on all fours, and cleaning the skirting boards and other areas that don’t see a sponge many times during the course of a year.

Do You Have Pets?

Even if you aren’t a pet lover, you never know, there could be an animal carcass in the chimney. It’s always worth getting a professional out to remove this, or to undertake a proper inspection. But this constant disgusting smell can wreak havoc in the house. In which case, it’s best to upset this balance with more than a few cans of air freshener. A scent fragrance diffuser or strong candles will help to overpower the smell on a temporary basis while the problem is rectified. If this isn’t doing the trick, activated charcoal is one of the best ways to remove bad odors. If you have pets in the home, you can buy activated charcoal capsules specifically for pet odors.

Get Acidic

Sometimes, the old tactics work the best. If your carpet is the culprit, acidic compounds, specifically vinegar, will kill a lot of bacteria. This also works wonders if you have a very smelly kitchen. If you do a lot of cooking, and you make a lot of spicy or pungent foods, as the smells can work their way into your cabinets, you can provide almost immediate results by boiling a cup of vinegar on the stove. The strong vapors released into the air cut through the strong smells created by the food. Of course, this does mean that your kitchen will smell like vinegar for a little bit!

Prevention Is The Cure

Once you know ways to isolate bad smells, prevention is always key. Knowing the trouble areas, such as the refrigerator, and utilizing the best techniques, whether it’s through baking soda, activated charcoal, or actually using a strong air freshener or candles, you are able to keep on top of these bad smells. Of course, there is no excuse to avoid cleaning the home properly, as this is the best way to minimize bad smells in the home. If your home is prone to bad smells on a near constant basis, take this as a lesson, you need to clean that little bit more.
