4 tips for keeping your home safe when you go away

Protecting your home while you’re away is just as important as protecting the things you take on holiday. Read on for 4 simple ways to keep your home safe and secure, so you can enjoy your break knowing everything will be waiting for you when you get back!

1. Get a good home security system

This is crucial! There are many options to choose from, so make sure you get a system that suits your home. A home security system is also a great visible deterrent to any would-be burglars – nothing is more off-putting than a flashing burglar alarm on the front of your house. The best security systems include both indoor and outdoor cameras, so you can see exactly what happens while you’re away.

For an extra layer of security, stash away your valuables in a safe. If someone did get in despite your best efforts, this would ensure your most treasured possessions are not readily available for the taking.

2. Leave a key with a family member or friend

While most letters and flyers will be posted through your door, you’ll still end up with things sticking out of your letterbox as they build up. You also can’t predict any forgotten deliveries that might be left outside your front door, red-flagging your home as the one which is unoccupied.

Leaving a spare key with someone you trust means that any unexpected deliveries can be brought inside, and if they’re feeling especially generous, they may even help out with a few things like taking out the bins and watering the plants!

This is much more secure than leaving a key under a rock or the doormat, because a burglar can take their time looking for a spare key if they are aware the property is unoccupied (and they will definitely find it).

3. Install an outdoor sensor light

These are often simple to install yourself, even if you’re not very tech-savvy. Budget-friendly sensor lights can be bought quickly and easily online from websites like Amazon. Motion sensor lights are a useful security measure all year round whether you’re home or not, so they are a good investment.

It could also be a good idea to set up some timers for lights inside your home, so that it appears as if people are home, especially during the evenings.

4. Be savvy with social media

With so many countdown apps out there, and a culture of sharing a lot of detail about our lives, it’s not uncommon for people to post how many days, weeks or even months it is until their next getaway. This is literally advertising a window of opportunity to anyone who can see your social media profiles, and who might have unsavoury motives. You might think you know everyone who you’re friends with, but you’d be surprised at what a simple Google search of your name might reveal, or what your friends of friends can view on your profile.

A sensible thing you could do is make sure your social media profiles are set to the most private setting, so that only your friends/followers can see the content you post… and maybe hold off on the holiday posts until you get back!
