The importance of going green

It matters not where you look nowadays, whether it’s the television or the newspapers, you are always made aware of the global crisis that is facing us all, and it should become more clear that the more of us that start to change now, the better it’s going to be for the future of our children and grandchildren.  So if you’re like me and you have children that are now inheriting our planet then it’s all the more important to start making changes and teaching them how they can also make a difference.

While some people think that it may be too late for change, I really don’t think it is. We just need to come together, and each do our own little bit. Once everyone is doing this, the changes will create a ripple effect across the world.  And we can’t always rely on our governments to make this happen.  We are all responsible.

Look at your utilities

One of the biggest things you can do that will really make a huge difference to your pocket as well as the environment is to take a look at your household utility usage.

One of the first things you should be considering, should you want to make significant changes to the planet, and your bank balance is solar power.  We were lucky enough to have purchased a house with solar panels already installed, but if you don’t already have them it’s seriously worth looking into.

Solar panels have become incredibly popular the world over, and they can reduce your monthly bills by around 30% from time to time.  Solar energy can be used to produce electricity, heat hot water and even help with cooling your house during the summer seasons.  If you require a cooling solution, then maybe consider split system aircon installation

You can also consider switching off lights and electrical equipment when not in use, switching energy supplier to a renewable provider, investing in a log burner and making use of a smart meter to monitor your usage and reduce where possible.

Don’t waste so much

One of the biggest issues we face on earth at the moment is the amount we waste, especially food.

Food waste is putting so much pressure on our world, and we waste a huge 1.3 billion tonnes of food per year.  This amount of waste not only puts pressure on the economy, but it also increases the number of emissions due to the machine power required to rid the waste.

One of the best ways to tackle this in the home is to create food plans and shop to match your food plan only. Most people, when shopping; do so with a certain whimsy that ends up costing them far more than it should.

By creating a food plan and also pre portioning food, you will find that your food waste levels drop exponentially and you will also be saving yourself quite a tidy sum of money too.  We also compost all our waste food in our garden which provide rich soil to feed our small food plantations.

Reduce plastic usage

We have taken great consideration into the amount of single use plastic we get through.  The bathroom is one place where we have reduced this dramatically.  Swapping shower gels for soap packages in paper and buying toilet paper from companies like ‘Who gives a crap‘, who deliver all their products in cardboard and paper.  Even our toothbrushes are made from bamboo rather than plastic.

The kitchen and food is the next place to make a difference.  Try ordering your fruit, vegetables and meat from companies like Able and Cole who now deliver all their products in recyclable materials.  Many other food brands have started introducing compostable packaging which you can add to the compost in the garden.

Furniture

Furnishing your home can be quite a costly experience but if you take the time to look around you’re likely to find a number of business and local craftsmen who provide upcycled and recycled furniture.  Reclaimed wood furniture is also becoming much more popular which is where I come in.  Take a look at my shop to see if there’s anything you like and feel free to get in touch to have something custom made.
