Whether you have a master ensuite, a family bathroom or a guest washroom, functionality is paramount.  Of course you want it to look great, but it also needs to serve its purpose.   If you’re thinking about remodelling your bathroom, here are a few things you might want to consider.

The lights

Recessed light fixtures can dramatically brighten up a bathroom.  They can also add ambiance to a room that might otherwise be lacking in this with regards to the lighting arrangements.  Many bathrooms simply have one main light and perhaps a light integrated into the mirror.  It’s possible to have a lot more fun with the lighting in the bathroom, well still allowing it to be functional.

You may even want to consider including one or two in the shower. Then, install a dimmer switch that lets you adjust the mood in the bathroom. Don’t forget about mirror lighting too. If you’re going to use the mirror to apply makeup or to shave, you’ll want brighter light fixtures so you can really see what you’re doing.

The shower

There’s quite a bit to consider when it comes to remodelling your shower.

A window in the shower – Firstly, a window in a shower can be an amazing feature if it’s done right. You’ll want to opt for frosted-glass for bathroom privacy as you’ll not want to be showering next to a normal window with neighbours nearby!

If you have a window then make sure you can open it for fresh air and to release bathroom steam.  This will help to prevent mould and mildew in the bathroom.  If the window is going to get wet when showering then the windowsill must slope downwards to ensure the shower water can drain and the window and surrounds must be sealed correctly so they are watertight.

Finally, a shower with a window does best with a tilt and turn window.  The window can lean in to open at the top which still gives you privacy even if it’s open whilst showering.  Choose plastic handles to ensure they are rust free if they are going to be showered every day!

The shower floor –If you are opting for a tiled shower floor, which does look much nicer and luxurious compared to many trays, then you’ll need to think about the size and texture of the tiles.  It’s harder to slope larger tiles, so smaller ones might be a better option.  Larger tiles are also more slippery as there are less areas of grout to provide that much needed grip.  If you must choose a larger tile then make sure it’s textured, otherwise you can choose any sort of smaller tile.

As for those shower sills, make sure you choose a solid material, like quartz or stone. If you decide to tile the shower curb, you don’t want water sitting on the grout and seeping through the frame.

Finally, think about the type of shower base you want. These days, you can get modern bases made out of porcelain or acrylic that can be much easier to install than tiles.

The plumbing

The larger the drains, the less likely they are to clog with hair and other debris. So, do consider increasing the size of your basin, bath and shower drains if you can. Take a look at bathrooms online for inspiration and make sure you call in an expert to fit your plumbing unless you know what you are doing.  You don’t want to give it a go if you’re unsure as it could be a costly mistake.

Tub or shower

You may not have the space for both a bath tub and a shower, so consider which you really prefer.  You might even choose to have a shower over the bathtub so you have the best of both worlds.  If you’re remodelling the bathroom for your own use then do it for yourself and pick the option you like the best.  If you prefer to soak in the tub, then why not spoil yourself to a modern Jacuzzi tub?  If you’re more a shower person then invest in an indulgent waterfall shower head.

If you’re thinking of selling up soon then choose the option that appeals to your ideal buyer, such as a bathtub if it’s for a family bathroom.

The storage

The bathroom is a place where you have lots of bits and pieces such as cosmetics, toiletries and even medicines, so you need some storage solutions.  A really cool idea is to recess a medicine cabinet, if you have the space, to give a really sleek finish.  Often medicine cabinets can jut out into the room and look unsightly, but a recessed version can simply look like a mirror hung on the wall.

A vanity unit is a great way to make use of otherwise wasted space.  If you have a freestanding sink then consider turning it into a vanity unit.   They also often provide countertop space surrounding the sink, giving you more space to organise and access your things.

The toilet

The toilet might seem like the least design focused part of the bathroom, but actually there are some modern ideas to make even the toilet look more contemporary.  Wall-hung toilets have become increasingly popular and give the effect of a floating toilet.  They’re affordable and they save space as the tank is hidden behind a wall.  This also stops the unattractive pipes from being on display as everything is cleverly out of sight.
