How to fulfil your dream of setting up a business at home

For some people, being able to start your own company and run your own business is the dream. But sometimes, it can be something that takes a while for you to actually launch. Maybe you’re not sure about what you want to do, or you don’t believe in yourself for a while? That’s definitely natural and normal.

However, when you do finally decide to take the plunge and go for it, you may find that you want to get things up and running as soon as possible. And to do that, you may need somewhere to work from. Not everyone will set up the kind of business that can be run from the couch or when you’re sat in bed. Sometimes, you need an office to keep you motivated or even a commercial space to be able to produce your work in! So, you definitely need to set up that designated workspace for yourself.

Depending on the type of work you do, you may need a different sort of workspace to the next person.  I’m a blogger and so really I just need a laptop and comfy seat.  I find I am more motivated sitting at a desk so I have a home office.  Ben, on the other hand, is setting up his own business making furniture.  He needs a workshop as well as somewhere to store the furniture.  He also has a website so needs a desk to sit at for the computer parts of his role.  Between us we have a need for quite a few different workspaces in the garden and in our home.

Now, the number one question for a lot of people at this point may be, but how? How do I do this? Because it’s quite a big job. And it can also be incredibly intimidating to a lot of people. Maybe the job seems so big that you just have no idea what to do at all? So, we’re going to break it down. If you want to create the perfect home office space or studio area on your property, here’s how to make it happen.

  1. Shortlist your locations

First of all, you’re going to want to think about where you would like your workspace to be. Where could you possible work on your business from? Sometimes, it’s okay to spend a few hours working in bed, but when you really want the motivational space, you need to fit it somewhere into the house. So create a shortlist. Do you have a spare room that you could use? If there a space downstairs that is meant for an office? Or, do you think you could add this business space on to what you have?

  1. Consider extending

Now, the first way to add on the space you need to what you have, is to extend your home. You may be able to build a little workspace on so that you can keep your business separate from your home life as much as possible. Plus, in extending your home, it could benefit more than just your business if you get some additional rooms your living space too.  It could even increase the value of your home for a future sale.

  1. Consider converting

Another option is to think about converting some of the spare space you may have around the home. Do you have a garage to convert into a business premises? Or maybe you attic space would make the perfect office? You may even have an unused basement that could become the perfect studio to start working on your business from!

  1. Consider building

The next option you have, is to build a specific space for your business on the property you own. Creating a home office in your backyard can be a great idea. It allows you to get that separate business space that you may feel like you need, but it can also be used for other purposes in the future should you move your work elsewhere.

  1. Get some quotes

Now that you’ve thought up the different ideas you could go for, you need to choose. And to do that, you may want to get some quotes on what the work would cost. If you’re thinking of doing some DIY for spaces like the garage conversion, you may only want to get quotes for some bits and not the entire project. Either way, if you are considering using a new space and not just a spare room, getting the prices together can help you to decide.

  1. Set a budget

When you’ve made a decision on what you want to do, it’s time to set a budget. You’ve got all of the costs together from the contractors, so now you need to work out what the DIY jobs will cost, along with anything else that you might like to do. It’s important for you to set a budget so that you can keep the costs in line as much as possible.

  1. Find design inspiration

From here, you’re then going to want to start thinking about how you want the space to look. And this can be the trickiest part of all. So head online and look for some office inspiration or at studio spaces that can inspire you. Create a vision board of what you like so that you can start to pull ideas together. This will often be the starting point of bringing everything together.

  1. Source the contractors

Now, even if you are doing a lot of DIY yourself, you may still want to bring in professionals to cover things like the electricity and water. This may be a step too far for you to do alone. So look for an electrician or a plumber to bring in to take on the bulk of the work for you. This is a great way to be able to keep the important costs for things that you need, but also make this a manageable project for yourself so that you’re not taking on too much.

  1. Start off yourself

Any work that you can do yourself, you’re going to want to start as soon as possible. Here, things like ripping out old flooring, and stripping the walls is a good idea – especially if you are using a room that you already have in place. When the room is completely bare, the work can begin.

  1. Let the work get underway

At this point, you want to let the professionals do their thing. If you’re extending, converting, or building and you’re not doing any of the building work yourself, leave the contractors to work their magic. You may want to start making decisions on design aspects here, so they can be brought in at the right time.

  1. Choose your designs

Now, you’ll want to finalise your choices for things like the wallpaper or the paint, the flooring, the wall trimmings, and even things like light fixtures. If you’re even looking to do a kitchen or bathroom space, these are also decisions that you will need to make as soon as possible so that they can all be worked in – whether you are painting and floor-fitting yourself, or not.

  1. Consider built-in storage

A huge part of your business space will be the storage. Whether you want to have somewhere to keep your paperwork and files or to store your brushes or your equipment, most businesses will need to have storage space to keep their things. Don’t let this be an afterthought as you may find that you’re left with a lot of clutter. So building in storage early is important.

  1. Kit-out the space

Next, you’re going to want to bring in all of the right furniture and business equipment. Depending on your business, this could be a desk and chair or it may be a workbench, kitchen equipment, or anything else relating to your company. Make sure that you’re bringing in all of the furniture that you need to be comfortable and get your work done.

  1. Make it feel like home

As a step on from that, you also need to bring in all of the things that make you feel at home in the office space. The whole point in creating this is so that you have a space you feel motivated to work in. If the space is too bright and empty, it may not feel comfortable or motivating. So bring in the soft furnishings, the photos, the wall art, and anything else you need to make sure the space is finished.

  1. Get to work

And then, all that’s left to do, is to start working. This can be the most exciting part of all. Because when you’ve managed to bring everything together to be able to launch and work on your home business, you’ll want to be able to work in it right away. So go ahead, enjoy it, and be happy that you’ve actually managed to get this sorted.

And the best part is, you can pick and choose which steps actually will apply to your setup, and then you can scale them to suit. So definitely start thinking about what it is that you want to achieve, bring in the quotes that you may want to consider and go from there. Sure, you could do the majority of the work on your own if you really wanted to, but working with contractors can make the job seem a little easier.
