Make sure to avoid these moving house mistakes

Moving house is one of the most stressful things you’ll ever do. Packing up everything you own and moving it all to a new place is a real pain, but it doesn’t have to be that hard or stressful with some forward planning. Organisation is key when you’re moving, but people often make a lot of mistakes that make life a lot harder for themselves. If you’re planning a move soon, make sure that you’re avoiding these common mistakes and everything will run a lot smoother.

Moving house tips: avoid these mistakes

Not planning ahead of time

The biggest mistake people make is underestimating just how long it’s going to take to sort everything out for the move. There are a lot of things you need to do well in advance of the move like measuring up the new house to make sure your furniture fits in, buying any new furniture you’re going to need, and getting rid of the stuff that you can’t take with you. All of that takes a lot of time and if you don’t plan ahead, you’ll find yourself rushing to do it all last minute which is going to be way more stressful. You should start making preparations for the move at least a month in advance, that way you can do a bit at a time rather than trying to pack it all into one weekend before the move.  Remember new sofas can have a six week lead time, so make sure you find things like this a couple of months in advance in case there’s a long wait or any delays.

Not hiring movers

Sometimes, people think they can save money by just moving their stuff themselves. How hard can it be? If you pack everything into the car and do a couple of trips, it’ll take no time at all, will it? Actually, it will. People often underestimate just how much stuff they have and if you’re just doing it in your car, you’ll spend days going back and forth to the new house. Things will be far easier if you hire a professional moving company like Two Men And A Truck. Not only will they help you move all of your stuff in one go, they’ll be able to help you pack things properly so you don’t risk breaking anything in transit.  Plus it will be an awful lot less stressful if you don’t have to do the move yourself.  Worth every penny!

Not checking your insurance

Even if you’ve got a professional moving company to help out, there’s always the chance that something will get broken during the move. A lot of home insurance policies will cover any breakages during a move but some won’t. You need to check yours well in advance of the move. If your policy doesn’t cover home moves you should change it to one that does. It may cost you a little more money but if you have valuable items you can’t afford to replace then it’s worth paying instead of taking a risk.  Removal companies should have insurances in place too so check to see if they cover breakages too.

Forgetting to change addresses

When you move house, there are all sorts of tiny details you need to sort out. One that people often forget is changing their address with banks and utility providers etc. It’s going to be a real pain if all of your mail is going to the old house for months and you might miss some important stuff. Make a list of all of the important mail you get and notify people of your change of address ahead of time.  It’s worth setting up a mail redirect for a few months or even up to a year with Royal Mail to make sure you get any mail you might have forgot to change your address on.

Avoid these common mistakes and you can take some of the stress out of moving house!
