How to Insulate a Shed: Walls, Floor & Roof

Most basic timber sheds aren’t designed with insulation in mind. They typically have thin timber cladding, shallow framing and plenty of small gaps around doors, windows and panel joints. This can make insulating an existing shed more difficult than simply fitting insulation between the timber studs.

I’ve insulated two very different timber sheds myself. The first was a workshop that I designed and built from scratch for my furniture business. I wanted to use it throughout the year, so keeping it warm was important. I also regularly used noisy power tools, which meant acoustic insulation was another priority.

For this build, I used 50mm ROCKWOOL RW45 with insulated plasterboard in the walls and roof, PIR insulation in the floor and double-glazed windows and doors. The result was a warm, well-insulated workshop that I later converted into an office. I’ve also used 50mm ROCKWOOL successfully in timber garden buildings where acoustic performance mattered.

My second project involved retrofitting insulation to a prefabricated shed. Although I improved it with additional framing, PIR insulation and double glazing, it was much harder to insulate effectively. The outer timber has subsequently developed damp and is beginning to rot.

In this guide, I’ll focus mainly on how to insulate a shed using the methods that worked successfully in my DIY workshop, while also sharing what I learned from the less successful prefab conversion.

Is It Worth Insulating a Shed?

Whether shed insulation is worth the investment depends largely on how you intend to use the building.

If it’s simply storing garden tools, bikes and a lawnmower, extensive insulation probably isn’t necessary. Keeping the building dry, weatherproof and ventilated is more important. A lean-to shed is a good example of this. A simple, watertight structure built for exactly this kind of storage without needing to think about insulation at all.

Insulation makes much more sense if you’re creating a:

  • Workshop
  • Home office
  • Hobby or craft room
  • Home gym
  • Music space
  • Heated workspace

My shed was originally a workshop for my furniture business. During winter, it became very cold, and I could spend hours inside using power tools. Insulation therefore needed to improve both thermal comfort and acoustic performance.

The project wasn’t cheap, but I consider it money well spent. When I eventually converted the workshop into an office, the building was already fully insulated.

If you’re building a shed that might eventually become a regularly occupied space, I’d strongly consider incorporating decent insulation from the beginning.

What Is the Best Insulation for a Shed?

For most timber sheds, I’d consider PIR insulation boards or mineral wool.

I’ve used both, but for different reasons.

I chose 50mm ROCKWOOL RW45 for my workshop because reducing noise from power tools was important. Mineral wool is particularly useful where acoustic performance matters as well as thermal insulation.

PIR is useful where cavity depth is limited. I used 25mm PIR when retrofitting my prefab shed because I couldn’t accommodate the same thickness of insulation.

There’s therefore no single best shed insulation. For a workshop I’d favour mineral wool where you have sufficient depth; for a shallow prefab shed, PIR can be easier to accommodate.

How Thick Should Shed Insulation Be?

The construction of the shed will often determine how much insulation you can install.

Some basic prefabricated shed panels I’ve worked with use framing of around 25×25mm, which doesn’t provide much room for insulation.

One solution is to increase the depth of the frame with additional timber battens. Adding 25×50mm timber, for example, can create a much more useful cavity without removing the external cladding.

In my purpose-built workshop, I had enough depth for 50mm mineral wool plus insulated plasterboard. In parts of my prefab shed, I was limited to around 25mm PIR.

Rather than automatically choosing the thickest insulation possible, consider the complete wall construction, internal space, moisture control and how you’re going to use the building.

If you’re building from scratch, decide on the insulation before designing the timber frame. It’s much easier to create sufficient cavity depth at the beginning.


How to Insulate a Shed: Step-by-Step

Step 1. Check the Shed Is Dry and Weatherproof

Before covering anything with insulation, make sure the shed is structurally sound and dry.

Check the roof covering, external cladding, floor, windows, doors and lower wall timbers for leaks, damp or rot. Repair any problems before continuing. I used an exterior sealant to fill any minor gaps or holes in the structure.

This is particularly important with an older prefab shed. Insulation and internal boards can hide the timber structure, so you don’t want to cover an existing moisture problem.

Step 2. Increase the Depth of the Timber Frame

If the existing frame isn’t deep enough for your chosen insulation, add timber battens internally.

Plan the new framing around both the insulation and your internal lining. Board edges should finish over solid timber, and it’s worth adding additional supports now for shelves, cabinets or other heavy items.

This stage is much easier on a new build because you can design the framing around the insulation from the start.

Step 3. Insulate the Shed Walls

Cut the insulation to fit snugly between the timber framing.

I used 50mm ROCKWOOL RW45 in my workshop walls. Cut mineral wool slightly wider than the opening so that it holds securely without excessive compression.

If you’re using PIR, measure each opening carefully and cut the boards for a close fit. Try to minimise gaps around the edges.

For my prefab shed, 25mm PIR was more practical because of the limited wall depth.

Step 4. Insulate the Shed Roof

Don’t overlook the roof if you intend to heat the shed.

I used the same 50mm ROCKWOOL in my workshop roof as I did in the walls. This kept the construction consistent while also contributing to the acoustic insulation.

PIR can also be used where appropriate, but don’t simply fill every available roof cavity. Your insulation needs to work with the roof’s ventilation and moisture-control strategy.

Step 5. Insulate the Shed Floor

The easiest time to insulate the floor is during construction.

My workshop was built over a patio slab base. To improve its thermal performance, I added approximately 30mm PIR and raised the finished floor above it. This cost me a small amount of headroom, but not enough to be noticeable.

With a suspended timber floor, insulation can instead be fitted between the floor joists.

If you’re insulating above an existing floor, check how the additional height will affect doors, thresholds and headroom before starting.

Step 6. Draught-Proof Windows and Doors

Insulating the main structure won’t achieve as much if cold air can still enter around poorly fitting windows and doors.

My workshop had one relatively small window and large French doors, both double glazed. This helped with both thermal and acoustic performance.

On my prefab shed I also replaced the basic windows with double-glazed units and added PIR to the doors where possible.

If replacement glazing isn’t practical, check frames, opening windows, door seals and thresholds and seal unwanted gaps with appropriate draught-proofing products.

Step 7. Manage Moisture and Ventilation

This is one of the most important lessons I learned from insulating my prefab shed.

Once you insulate and draught-proof a previously leaky timber building, you’ve changed how moisture moves through it. Warm, moist internal air reaching cold parts of the structure can potentially cause condensation, damp and eventually timber decay.

For an appropriate timber-frame construction, a vapour control layer (VCL) is normally positioned on the warm internal side of the insulation. The exact wall and roof build-up will depend on the shed construction and insulation system you’re using.

Foil-faced PIR or certain insulated plasterboards can sometimes form part of the vapour-control strategy when installed and sealed correctly. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the complete construction.

You also need appropriate ventilation inside a regularly occupied or heated shed.

My prefab shed is now showing signs of damp and rot. I can’t attribute that deterioration to one single cause, but the experience has made me much more cautious about adding insulation to thin prefab walls without considering how the whole structure manages moisture.

Step 8. Fit the Internal Wall Lining

Once the insulation and moisture-control layers are complete, you can finish the interior with plasterboard, insulated plasterboard, plywood, OSB or timber cladding.

For my workshop, I used insulated plasterboard over the ROCKWOOL, adding further thermal insulation and creating a surface that could be finished internally.

For a working workshop, I’d also consider plywood or OSB. They’re strong and make mounting shelves, cupboards and tool racks much easier.

If you want a more office-like interior, plasterboard provides a cleaner painted finish.


How to Insulate an Existing Shed Without Removing the Cladding

You can normally insulate an existing wooden shed from the inside without removing the external cladding.

This is essentially what I did with my prefab shed.

Start by checking that the existing building is dry and structurally sound. You can then use the existing frame as the starting point, adding timber battens where necessary to create sufficient depth for insulation.

The basic process is:

Existing cladding → existing timber frame → additional battens if required → insulation → appropriate vapour control → internal lining.

You can then address the roof, floor, windows and doors separately.

However, I’d think carefully before spending significant money upgrading a cheap or deteriorating prefab shed.

My retrofit improved the comfort of the building, but it has never performed as well as my purpose-built workshop. The external timber is now deteriorating and I expect I’ll eventually demolish it and extend the better DIY building instead.

If the existing shed already has significant damp, rot or structural problems, rebuilding may offer better value than trying to turn it into a highly insulated room.

How to Insulate a Shed Cheaply

Shed insulation can become expensive, but there are sensible ways to reduce the cost.

Look for leftover or discounted PIR and mineral wool from building projects or insulation suppliers. Minor cosmetic damage may not matter, but avoid insulation that’s wet, badly damaged or unsuitable for its intended use.

If you’re working to a limited budget, I’d also:

  • Do as much of the installation yourself as you’re comfortable with.
  • Seal obvious draughts around windows and doors.
  • Prioritise the walls and roof before less significant upgrades.
  • Use plywood or OSB as the finished workshop surface rather than paying for plastering.
  • Incorporate insulation during construction rather than retrofitting it later.

I’d avoid stuffing cavities with old clothes, packaging, loose polystyrene or other household materials simply because they’re free. Proper building insulation gives you much more predictable thermal, moisture and fire performance.

And remember that the cheapest shed isn’t necessarily the cheapest building to insulate. My prefab shed is a good example of how upgrading a basic structure can eventually become a false economy.

Insulating a Shed for Use as an Office or Workshop

A heated office or workshop requires more thought than a shed used for storage.

You’ll potentially spend several hours inside, so thermal comfort, draught-proofing, ventilation and moisture management become much more important.

For a workshop, sound insulation may also matter. This was one of my main reasons for choosing ROCKWOOL RW45. I regularly used saws, sanders and other power tools and wanted to reduce the amount of noise escaping into the garden.

My final construction combined:

50mm ROCKWOOL walls and roof + insulated plasterboard + PIR floor insulation + double glazing.

It cost significantly more than leaving the building as a basic shed, but it gave me a comfortable year-round workshop.

More importantly, I later converted the same shed into an insulated garden office. Because the main structure was already insulated, I didn’t need to rebuild the shell when its use changed.

If you think your workshop might eventually become an office, studio or hobby room, that’s a good argument for spending a little more on the insulation when you first build it.

Having insulated both a purpose-built workshop and a prefab shed, I’ve learned that the building you’re starting with makes a big difference.

My DIY workshop was designed with insulation in mind. The combination of 50mm ROCKWOOL, insulated plasterboard, PIR floor insulation and double glazing created a comfortable year-round workspace that I could later convert into an office.

The prefab shed was much more difficult to upgrade successfully. Although the insulation improved it, its shallow construction and subsequent moisture problems mean I wouldn’t approach the project the same way again.

If you’re building from scratch, design the insulation into the shed from the beginning. If you’re retrofitting an existing shed, first make sure it’s dry, structurally sound and worth investing in.

Done properly, shed insulation can transform a basic timber building into a workshop or workspace that you can comfortably use throughout much more of the year.
