Are Plastic Shed Bases Any Good?

If you’re planning a new shed for the garden, you’ve probably come across plastic shed bases while researching your options. They’re marketed as a quick, mess-free alternative to concrete, slabs or timber, and on paper they sound like the perfect shortcut. But are plastic shed bases any good in practice?

I’ve fitted plastic shed bases on a handful of customer installations over the years, alongside plenty of timber and concrete bases, so I’ve got a fairly balanced view of where they work well and where they fall short. Here’s what I’ve learned.

What Is a Plastic Shed Base?

A plastic shed base, sometimes sold as a shed base grid or plastic grid shed base, is made up of interlocking plastic cells that click together to form a rigid, permeable platform. You lay the grid over a prepared area of ground, fill the cells with gravel or sand, and then build your shed straight on top. Most plastic shed base kits come with a weed membrane included, and some also include edging strips to keep gravel contained.

The idea is simple: a stable, well-draining surface without the labour of mixing concrete or building a full timber frame.

The Good: Where Plastic Bases Work Well

The single biggest advantage I’ve found with a plastic shed base is drainage. Because the grid is permeable, water passes straight through rather than pooling underneath the shed floor. Timber bases can trap moisture and eventually rot, but a plastic grid simply doesn’t have that problem, which is a real benefit if you want your shed to last.

Where plastic shed bases genuinely shine is on an existing patio or decking area. If you’ve already got a solid, flat surface, laying a plastic shed base plastic grid straight on top is quick and sensible. You get good drainage, a level surface, and none of the rot risk of timber. In this situation, I’d happily recommend one.

They’re also lightweight and easy to handle compared with paving slabs, which matters if you’re working on your own or don’t have easy vehicle access to the garden.

The Not-So-Good: Where They Fall Short

Here’s the catch, though. A plastic shed base only performs well if it’s laid completely level. If the grid isn’t dead flat, it won’t provide a stable enough platform to build a shed on, and you’ll notice it the moment you try to erect the walls. Doors won’t hang square, panels won’t sit flush, and you’ll be fighting the structure the whole way through the build.

That means you still need to properly prepare the ground before laying the base. You can’t just skip straight to clicking the grid together on rough grass or turf and expect a good result. In my experience, this is where a lot of the supposed time saving disappears. You still need to dig out and level the area, add a sub-base of compacted gravel or hardcore, and get everything properly flat before the plastic grid goes down. On grass or turf specifically, it can end up being just as much work as building a proper timber shed base, if not more, because the grid itself adds very little structural forgiveness for an uneven surface.

There’s also the look of the thing. A plastic shed base does the job, but it doesn’t have the same appearance or solidity as a timber base once the shed is up. If the base is ever visible around the edges, or you like a shed to look properly built rather than just sat on a bit of gravel and plastic, timber tends to win out.

Plastic vs Timber vs Gravel: Which Should You Choose?

If you’re building on grass or bare garden soil, I’d lean towards a timber shed base or a full gravel base with pressure-treated bearers. If you’re building on an existing patio, slabs or decking, a plastic shed base kit is a solid, sensible choice. The ground is already flat, so you’re removing the main weakness of the plastic grid system, and you get the drainage benefit without the effort of a full ground-up build.

Either way, the base is the part of the job that’s easy to rush and hard to fix once the shed is up, so it’s worth getting right before you move on to the actual build. Final Verdict

So, are plastic shed bases any good? Yes, but with a condition. On a flat, existing surface like patio or decking, a plastic shed base grid is a genuinely good option: quick to lay, good drainage, and no rot to worry about. On grass or uneven garden ground, though, you’re not saving as much time or effort as the marketing suggests, and a properly built timber or gravel base will usually give you a sturdier, better-looking result for your garden sheds.
