I’ve used timber cladding on several projects, including my garden room exterior, interior ceiling and for a couple of home interior panelling projects. When done right, the results are beautiful. Here’s an example of my garden room ceiling.

In my example, you can see I’ve installed reclaimed timber shelving with steel brackets in my kitchen to add a rustic, industrial feel that contrasts both the warmth of the wood and the coldness of the metal brackets.

If you’re working with heavier items like books, decorative pieces or tinned goods, ensure your shelves are properly anchored to wall studs using appropriate hardware. Here’s an example of our pantry where weight was a primary concern. I’ve used deep wall anchors and scaffold boards for suitable support.
Consider the thickness of your timber boards based on the intended load and span distance between supports. Finishing touches such as edge routing, sanding to a smooth finish, and applying wood oil or varnish will enhance both the appearance and durability of your shelving project.
3. Timber Feature Wall
A timber feature wall can be the focal point of any room, adding texture and interest. This project involves applying timber panels or planks to a single wall, creating a striking contrast with the rest of the room’s decor. You can experiment with different patterns, such as herringbone or chevron, to achieve a unique look.

Installing a timber feature wall requires careful planning and preparation to achieve professional-looking results. Start by measuring your wall accurately and calculating the amount of timber needed, allowing for approximately 10% extra for cuts and waste. Prepare the wall surface by ensuring it’s clean, dry, and level before beginning installation.
You can attach timber planks directly to the wall using construction adhesive and finishing nails, or create a framework of battens for easier installation. Mixing different wood tones or incorporating lighting elements behind semi-transparent panels can add depth and drama to your feature wall, creating an impressive architectural statement.
4. Timber Coffee Table
A timber coffee table can anchor your living room, adding warmth, texture and a strong natural focal point. Unlike mass-produced furniture, a handcrafted timber piece tells a story through its grain, knots and organic edges. Whether you choose a clean, modern finish or a more rustic style, solid timber offers durability and timeless appeal that improves with age.
For my own living space, I created a custom coffee table from a single slab of ash wood. I preserved the natural shape and character of the slab, allowing the grain patterns and subtle imperfections to take centre stage as the piece’s hero. To give it even more personality, I crafted the legs from branches of an apple tree. Creating furniture from sustainably sourced timber not only adds character to your home but also ensures your project is environmentally responsible.
The gently curved forms of the branches contrast beautifully with the solid ash top, creating a balance between structure and organic flow. The result is not just a functional table, but a one-of-a-kind statement piece that reflects craftsmanship, sustainability and the natural beauty of timber.
5. Timber Headboard
Upgrade your bedroom with a custom timber headboard. This DIY project allows you to create a personalised piece that complements your bed and overall bedroom design. We created this beautiful headboard and matching side table from diamond-shaped wooden pieces, carefully slotted together to make this patterned Moroccan style.

6. Timber Dining Table

7. Timber Garden Corner Sofa
